What Does Closing a DM Do on Discord?

Closing a Discord DM removes the conversation from your visible message list. It does not delete the message history, block the other person, or remove them as a friend.

The short answer

Think of Close DM as clearing one conversation from the sidebar or Messages tab. It changes what you see, not the conversation itself.

  • Your old messages stay in the DM.
  • The other person keeps their copy of the conversation.
  • Your friend, block, and privacy settings do not change.
  • Either person can still send a message if Discord's normal DM permissions allow it.

Closing is useful when you want a tidier message list. It is not the right control when you want to erase a message or stop someone from contacting you.

Does closing a Discord DM delete the history?

No. Discord treats closing a private message and deleting a message as different actions. Its Search guide explains that messages remain searchable in a DM until they are deleted.

If you reopen a closed conversation, its earlier messages should still be there. Images, links, and files shared in the history also remain unless the relevant message or attachment is deleted or becomes unavailable.

Discord does not provide a one-click way to erase an entire one-to-one DM. If you need to remove something you sent, delete that specific message. Closing the DM does not do it for you.

How to close a DM

Desktop or browser

Find the conversation in your Direct Messages list. Hover over it and select the close control, or open the conversation's context menu and choose Close DM. The exact placement can vary with Discord's current layout, but the action is labeled Close DM.

Mobile

Open Home, then Messages. Press and hold the conversation to open its options, then choose Close DM.

Closing affects only that conversation in your own list. It does not close the DM for the other participant.

How to reopen a closed DM

On desktop or browser, press Ctrl+K on Windows or Command+K on macOS. Type @ followed by the person's username, then select the DM. Discord's Quick Switcher guide documents the @ shortcut for direct messages.

You can also open the person's profile from your Friends list or a shared server and choose Message.

On mobile, open Home, tap Messages, then use the search icon to find the person or conversation. Discord's mobile Messages guide also documents a Message button for starting or returning to a DM.

Reopening the history does not guarantee that a new message will send. Discord may reject a new DM if you no longer share a server, the recipient accepts messages only from friends, server DM permissions are off, or one person has blocked the other. Discord lists these cases in Why isn't my DM going through?

Closing, deleting, blocking, and unfriending are different

Close the DM when you only want to remove the conversation from your visible list. The history and relationship remain.

Delete a message when you want to remove a specific message you sent. This changes the conversation history. Closing the DM does not delete messages.

Block the person when you want to stop direct contact. Discord lists blocking as a reason a new DM cannot be delivered. Blocking does not automatically erase the old conversation. See Discord's Blocking & Privacy Settings for its current controls.

Unfriend the person when you want to remove the friendship without blocking them. The old DM history stays. Whether either person can send another message then depends on shared servers and each person's privacy settings.

If your goal is to limit new messages from nonfriends in a server, change your DM permissions instead. The Discord server DM settings guide covers that separate control.

Choose the action that matches your goal

  • Clean up the message list: Close DM.
  • Remove one message you sent: Delete that message.
  • Stop someone from sending new DMs: Block them.
  • Remove someone from your Friends list without blocking: Unfriend them.
  • Limit messages from nonfriends in shared servers: Change Direct Messages under Discord's privacy settings.

Closing is the reversible choice. Use it when the history can stay and you only want the conversation out of view.

Common questions

Q: Can the other person still message me after I close the DM?
A: Yes, unless your privacy settings or a block prevents it. A new message can make the conversation visible again.

Q: Does closing a DM remove the person as a friend?
A: No. Closing the conversation does not change your Friends list.

Q: Can I recover a closed Discord DM?
A: Yes. Find the person with Quick Switcher, mobile Messages search, your Friends list, or a shared server, then open the DM again.

Q: Why can I reopen the history but not send a message?
A: Message delivery has separate rules. You may no longer share a server, the recipient may accept DMs only from friends, server DM permissions may be off, or one of you may have blocked the other.

Q: Can I delete the whole DM for both people?
A: Discord does not offer a one-click action that erases an entire one-to-one conversation for both participants. Closing only hides it from your list. Delete specific messages you sent if you need to remove them.

Q: Is closing a DM the same as hiding it?
A: In practical terms, yes. It removes the conversation from the visible list without deleting the history.
